BECOME A PROVINCIAL COUNCILLOR

Registered Psychiatric Nursing is a self-regulating profession. As part of self-regulation, we need RPNs with your knowledge, experience and dedication to maintain the regulatory framework that defines us and helps shape the future of psychiatric nursing in this province in a manner that protects and serves the public.

  • meet psychiatric nursing colleagues who share your passion for psychiatric nursing at the provincial and national levels
  • work with leaders who are shaping psychiatric nursing in Alberta
  • learn from the knowledge and experience of colleagues on Council
  • represent the registered psychiatric nursing profession to government, the public and other stakeholders
  • play a crucial role in self-governance for Alberta’s RPNs
  • incorporate the RPN perspective in the development of health policy for Albertans
  • expand networks with provincial and national psychiatric nurse leaders
  • work collaboratively to address psychiatric nursing issues
  • develop and expand your leadership abilities as you help govern the psychiatric nursing profession in Alberta

PROVINCIAL COUNCILLOR COMMITMENT

Ready to make a difference? Here’s what to expect:

  • serve as a Provincial Councillor for four years
  • prepare for Council meetings, time commitment of 7 - 10 days annually
    • four one-day Provincial Council meetings in Edmonton
    • committee meetings, and/or strategic sessions as necessary
  • participate actively in discussions, while respecting other opinions and committing to Council decisions
  • contribute to the development of priorities for the College and the profession through strategic planning activities
  • link with the public and the membership to bring their input to Council
  • act on behalf of, and be accountable to, the public.

APPOINTMENT PROCESS

Eligibility Requirements:

✅ Registered on the Practicing or Provisional register with CRPNA
✅ Be in good standing on the date of the application
✅ Minimum of 1 year of practice in Canada
✅ Willing to serve a 4-year term
✅ Review and meet the *required Council Competency and Attributes Matrix
✅ Submit the names and contact information of two references to be contacted by CRPNA 
✅ Submit an Application Form and Member Overview
✅ Comfortable with computer and internet use. Familiarity with MS Office, and Zoom are beneficial. (Support available if needed)

Note: Skills can be developed during the first year on Council if you're committed to learning.


How It Works:

  1. Conflict of Interest: Ensure your personal interests don’t interfere with Council duties. Review the CRPNA’s Conflict of Interest Policy for details.
  2. Submit Your Application by the deadline.
  3. Review Process: Eligible applications will be assessed by the Appointment Committee.
  4. Interviews/Requests: The Committee may reach out for interviews or additional information.
  5. Recommendation: The Committee will recommend appointments at the November Council meeting.
  6. Announcement: Appointments will be announced within 7 days and posted on the CRPNA website.
