To be eligible to practice as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) in Alberta, you must meet registration requirements set by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA).
Permit Requirements for Psychiatric Nursing in Alberta
Under the Health Professions Act (Part 2, Registration, Section 28(2)) and the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Profession Regulation, there are three pathways to obtain a practice permit in Alberta. Each pathway depends on your education and where you were previously registered.
1. Approved Psychiatric Nursing Education Programs
- New Canadian Registered Psychiatric Nurse Graduates
This pathway is for recent graduates who have recently graduated from a Canadian-approved psychiatric nursing program. This recognizes your education as already meeting the approved program requirements.
2. Equivalent Jurisdiction
- Canadian Registered Psychiatric Nurses from Canada
This pathway is for applicants who are already registered as a psychiatric nurse in another Canadian jurisdiction. Applications will be processed under the equivalent jurisdiction pathway.
3. Substantial Equivalence
- International Applicants
This pathway is for IEPNs who are applying from a jurisdiction outside of Canada. Education and experience will be assessed under the substantial equivalence pathway to determine eligibility for registration.
Mandatory Registration for Psychiatric Nursing Practice
