INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED PSYCHIATRIC NURSES

Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway

Welcome to the Internationally Educated Psychiatric Nurses (IEPN) Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway, a streamlined initiative by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Designed to support IEPNs immigrating to Alberta, this program simplifies the credential evaluation process and will significantly shorten the timeline for IEPNs entering Alberta's workforce.

Program Overview

The IEPN Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway is a transformative initiative funded by the Government of Alberta. Our goal is to reduce barriers for IEPNs by offering a faster, more efficient process for assessing credentials. This pathway ensures that qualified professionals can integrate into Alberta’s healthcare system seamlessly, contributing their expertise to our communities.

Development and Expertise

Launched in late 2024, the pathway was developed through a collaborative effort led by a dedicated committee. This group included:

  • Subject matter experts from Western Canadian psychiatric nursing regulators, bringing regional insights and regulatory expertise.
  • A research consultant to ensure the assessment process is credible, valid, and reliable.

The committee conducted an in-depth analysis of curriculum data from the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and the Republic of Ireland, which together represent over 96% of international applications received by CRPNA. This thorough approach ensures that the pathway is tailored to meet the needs of most applicants while maintaining high standards for registration.

Eligibility and Requirements

The IEPN Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway is open to eligible applicants from specific psychiatric nursing programs in the United Kingdom, Nigeria, or the Republic of Ireland, within designated graduation years. To be eligible, your credentials must demonstrate substantial equivalency to the competencies and standards required for psychiatric nursing practice in Alberta.

To determine your eligibility, click "Start" at the bottom of this page to complete the self-assessment questionnaire.

To apply, you will need to:

  • Have a World Education Services (WES) Credential Evaluation and Authentication Report submitted directly to CRPNA for document and program validation. For more information on obtaining a WES Report, visit https://www.wes.org/.
  • Complete the application process.

Application Process

Applying to the IEPN Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway is straightforward:

  1. Complete the Application: Submit a completed application form along with all the required documents and the non-refundable payment of $525.00.
  2. Await Your Outcome: Once your completed application, payment, and all required WES documents are received, an outcome letter will be sent via email within 5-10 business days.

Looking Ahead

The CRPNA is committed to continuously improving access for IEPNs. In the future, we intend to expand the IEPN Expedited Credential Assessment Pathway to include additional countries and programs, further broadening opportunities for internationally educated psychiatric nursing professionals.
