REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TYPES OF APPLICANTS

BECOMING A REGISTERED PSYCHIATRIC NURSE IN ALBERTA

To be eligible to practice as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) in Alberta, you must meet registration requirements set by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA).

To practice as a psychiatric nurse in Alberta, you must be registered with CRPNA and hold a valid practice permit.

You may not work or volunteer as a RPN or use the protected title or designation PN or RPN in Alberta until you have received written confirmation from the College that your registration has been approved, and your practice permit has been issued. Working and/or volunteering as a PN or RPN includes participating in an employment clinical interview, orientation, or training.

NEW PSYCHIATRIC NURSE GRADUATES

For new graduates from a CRPNA approved psychiatric nursing program in Alberta, or graduates from a CRPNA recognized approved psychiatric nursing program from another Canadian jurisdiction who have not yet registered as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) in their home jurisdiction (province) and who would like to apply for registration in Alberta.

CANADIAN RPNs

For Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) applicants who are currently or have previously been registered as an RPN in another province or territory.

INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED PSYCHIATRIC NURSES

For applicants whose psychiatric nursing education was completed outside of Canada or who are Canadian Citizens who received their psychiatric nursing education in another country and are not currently registered in Alberta.
