The Registered Psychiatric Nurses Foundation Inc. (RPNF) is pleased to announce the establishment of the new McCormick/Henry Scholarship for studies in the mental health and mental illnesses for/of seniors. The Scholarship was established in honour of a Registered Psychiatric Nurse who has contributed to seniors’ mental health issues at the provincial, national and international levels.
This latest scholarship adds to the two previous national scholarships offered by the RPNF
- John Alex Crawford Scholarship - This is a National Scholarship honoring John's professional dedication to education and practice standards development for Psychiatric Nursing. This Scholarship of a minimum of $1000 is for any Registered Psychiatric Nurse in Canada who wishes to pursue Master's or Doctoral studies that are directly related to any of the four domains of Psychiatric Nursing Practice
- The Annette Osted National Student Scholarship celebrates one of the leaders who advocated for the advancement of all Psychiatric Nurses in Canada - a minimum of $500 awarded to a Psychiatric Nurse student enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the Baccalaureate Psychiatric Nursing program at a Canadian University. (Applicants are required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA for this Scholarship)
- The McCormick/Henry Scholarship - This scholarship is for an RPN in Canada who is taking further studies in seniors mental health at the graduate level (MA or PhD) or through an accredited certificate program.

CRPNA is pleased to report that the CRPNA Education Fund for Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs) in Alberta that was on hold in response to legislative changes made by the Government of Alberta will now continue through ARNET.
“I am delighted that the Education Fund for RPNs will continue in Alberta, as this ensures that Registered Psychiatric Nurses will continue to have access to valuable educational opportunities specifically designed to support their professional development and educational goals,”says CRPNA’s CEO, Barbara Lowe.

For 40 years, ARNET has proudly supported continuing and advanced education for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Alberta. Starting in 2025, we are excited to expand our funding support to include all nurses — including Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs).
Nurses in every nursing role play a vital part in Alberta’s health care system, and ARNET is proud to now be a charity supporting the professional development of all nurses. Together, we are helping to improve health care across the province.
Along with this change in scope, we will also be announcing a new name in the coming weeks to better reflect our inclusive support of all nurses. We’re also pleased to announce that ARNET has recently received grant funding from the Alberta government to support the continuing education of LPNs and RPNs.

The College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) is placing the Ted James Scholarship Award into the stewardship of the Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN).
This transfer comes as part of provincial legislative changes under Bill 46 made in 2020, which states that regulatory bodies must divest from association activities. Scholarships fall under that umbrella of activities.
“The CRPNA is pleased to announce that the management of the esteemed Ted James Scholarship Award will now be transferred to the AAN. This transition ensures that Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs) will continue to have access to valuable educational opportunities specifically designed to support their professional development and educational goals,” says CRPNA’s CEO, Barbara Lowe.
The Ted James Scholarship Award honours Edward (Ted) James, the Founder of the Psychiatric Nurses Association and first President 1950 – 1958. Ted James received tremendous support in his efforts to form the Alberta Psychiatric Nurses Association which was founded on May 1, 1950. Throughout his life, Ted James was committed to the ongoing advancement of high-quality psychiatric nursing education programs graduating well-qualified psychiatric nurses.
“AAN’s purpose is to enhance, promote, and advocate for all nursing disciplines, so we are excited to oversee this scholarship to support RPN professional development,” says AAN’s CEO, Kathy Howe. “We share the vision and drive that Ted James lived out to advance the psychiatric nursing profession. His legacy of founding the Alberta Psychiatric Nurses Association is a testament to the power of how both individual nurses, and our voice as a collective, can make an immense impact.”
The Alberta Association of Nurses is the province’s only professional nursing association open to all nurses with the purpose of enhancing, promoting, and advocating for the nursing profession.
