INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED
PSYCHIATRIC  NURSES

Information for Internationally Educated Psychiatric Nurses:

01

APPLY TO NATIONAL NURSING ASSESSMENT SERVICES

All internationally educated psychiatric nurses (IEPNs) who want to apply to CRPNA must first apply directly to the National Nursing Assessment Services (NNAS) to have their education credentials assessed. NNAS coordinates a consistent national approach for IEPNs seeking registration/licensure to practice in Canadian jurisdictions.

02

APPLY TO CRPNA TO REVIEW NNAS ADVISORY REPORT

  • Once NNAS has completed the advisory report, the IEPN must submit a request to CRPNA to review this report in order to determine the IEPNs eligibility to write the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination (RPNC Exam) and eligibility for registration.
  • Click here for the NNAS Report Review Form.
  • Once the review of the report has been completed a letter will be sent from CRPNA advising the outcome.

PROVISIONAL PERMIT SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

A Provisional Permit holder can practice only while supervised in a manner satisfactory to the Registrar or Registration Committee. Defined as:

  • Not to be in charge of a unit or work alone on a night shift.
  • May use the title "Psychiatric Nurse" or initial "PN"

Supervision can be direct or indirect remote:

  • Indirect remote supervision: a Regulated Nurse provides the supervision and is readily available by phone or on another adjacent unit.
  • This means a Regulated Nurse is on the unit or in the same location for guidance and consultation but is not directly at the side of the PN (graduated psychiatric nurse).  In community health settings or in home care, the Regulated Nurse must be physically present in the clinic setting or in the client’s home.
